Tummy Tuck surgery, also known as abdominoplasty, is performed to correct a protruding or loose, sagging abdomen by removing excess skin and fat from the abdominal area. It is not a weight loss procedure. Abdominal muscles that have weakened or separated can be corrected with a tummy tuck. A tummy tuck will not correct stretch marks, although they may be somewhat removed if they are located on the areas of excess skin that will be excised. When undergoing this surgery, you will be asked to refrain from bending, straining or lifting anything very heavy for several days to receive a successful outcome. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility or in the hospital. Initial healing may take up to 5 – 10 days. Patients can generally return to work within 2 – 3 weeks with no strenuous activity and return to normal activity within 4 -6 weeks.

Other procedures may also be performed at the same time as a tummy tuck if the patient is a good candidate for the procedure. A tummy tuck is not a substitute for exercise or weight loss programs, and the outcome can be diminished by weight fluctuations.
